The
sky was fading blue as the last of the sunset fell from the heavens. In
the cloudless sky the full moon rose brilliantly even as the sunset
colors of blue and pale purple shown above. It was the fierce blue of
his wife's eyes. The 2 tiny slits of the sky visible from his spot on
the floor while shackled to the wall kept him company most days; it was
as if his wife was there staring at him as she had so many times.
Before he had left on the crusade he would just wake and find her
watching him; she blushed every time she was caught. It never made her
stop though. He had never thought himself a handsome man until he heard
the catch in her breath when he was near, even though he had been told
enough times that it was true. Every time he caught her she made the
same little sound, like she was the naive virgin she had been when they
wed instead of together for over a year. To have a beautiful woman act
so strongly it was hard to ignore that you might be fair to look upon.
"Sire?"
Luc didn't take his eyes from the sky as the blue faded into black.
"How many did you find?"
"2 carpenters one a woodcarver, a handful of farmers, a baker, even a
priest none with violent crimes. But over half have wives and
children." Hugh the duke's man answered.
"They may bring them and all their household goods. The land around the
Abbey will be cleared; new farms can be started with better prospects
than here."
Hugh smiled. "They were hoping you would say that their women are
packed up as well."
"There weren't any stone masons?"
"No, but I'll ask perhaps they can come out later if they aren't able to
leave in the morning."
Luc sounded far away when he spoke again. "Make sure Aissa gets some
warmer clothes, she's not used to this weather."
"Wouldn't it be better to sell her, you could use the money."
The far away look and sound were gone. "She's not being sold." Luc
roared.
Hugh slipped back inside leaving Luc to the moon and his wife.
